Malaria Prevention: What Medication Do You Need?

Planning a trip to countries in Africa, South Asia, or parts of Southeast Asia? These are malaria-endemic zones, and taking malaria prophylaxis is an important consideration to protect yourself.

Common anti-malaria medications include atovaquone and proguanil, doxycycline, chloroquine and mefloquine with varying efficacies and dosage regimes.

One of the most commonly prescribed medications is Malarone (atovaquone-proguanil), known for its high effectiveness and minimal side effects. At District Family Clinics, Malarone costs $14 per tablet. You usually need to start taking it 1–2 days before travel, continue daily during the trip, and for 7 days after leaving the area.

Other antimalarials include Doxycycline, which is more affordable, but causes sun sensitivity and will require 4 weeks of continuous usage after the trip. Your choice depends on your destination, travel length, and personal health profile.

Besides malaria pills, consider packing:
